Handling Food Safely
Proper procedures when handling food will ensure the enjoyment of your products from Omaha Steaks. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Always thaw your products in the refrigerator or use the quick thaw method by placing your product in cold water in the vacuum package for approximately 30 minutes. Never thaw products at room temperature.
Food products will not last indefinitely in the freezer or refrigerator. Always plan to use your foods from Omaha Steaks in a reasonable amount of time.
Do not use the same cutting board or platter for raw meats and cooked meats. Wash hands, utensils, cutting boards and counters that contact raw food.
Cook meats to the proper degree of doneness. Ground meat items need to be cooked to 160°F internal temperature.
Do not allow cooked meats to stand at room temperature. Always refrigerate leftovers immediately.
Packaging
You’ll find Nutrition Facts Panels on many of our products. According to the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, single ingredient meat and poultry products are exempt from mandatory labeling. Raw fruits, vegetables and single ingredient fish fall under the voluntary nutrition labeling program.
Many of our products come vacuum packaged. This enhances the shelf life and preserves the flavor and texture of our products. This film should be left on while thawing in the refrigerator. With vacuum packaged seafood, a small slit or two should be made in the vacuum, then the seafood should be placed in the refrigerator to thaw.
When preparing our items for cooking, always remove plastic or vacuum packaging with the exception of the items that can be heated in the bag.
