History of Chicken Fried Steak

There are a few competing histories of chicken fried steak, but the general agreement is that it’s a descendent of wiener schnitzel, that’s spent plenty of time in the American South. German and Austrian immigrants brought their love of breaded and fried meats to the United States with dishes that were commonly prepared with veal or pork. However, as beef became more readily available in the US, people began substituting it for veal. Now, chicken fried steak is almost always a tasty cut of tenderized beef deep-fried in a crunchy batter and served with gravy.

Cooking Omaha Steaks Chicken Fried Steak

Omaha Steaks chicken fried steaks batter is perfect — crunchy and satisfying with a little peppery kick. It’s par-fried, meaning it’s ready for the oven and barely takes any work in your kitchen to come out perfectly every time. Inside is tender, juicy, flavorful Omaha Steaks sirloin steak, and the combination is perfect. So, instead of pounding beef, flouring and. Battering, all you have to do is put it in the oven and serve.

Best Gravy and Side Dishes for a Chicken Fried Steak Meal

What’s chicken fried steak without gravy? Omaha Steaks Chicken Gravy to be specific. Our super-popular, super-easy gravy is the best — it uses a Veloute sauce which is a chicken stock reduction thickened with a little white roux. Instead of that fatty, wallpaper paste gravy that you often see with this dish, ours has an incredible layered chicken flavor that pairs perfectly with chicken fried steak.

Speaking of pairing, stick with the southern theme and serve it with Steakhouse Creamed Corn, Green Beans in Butter Sauce, or both. Try our Omaha Steaks Smashed Red Potatoes or something similar for starch but there’s really only one thing that matters here. It’s gravy. Top EVERYTHING with a creamy gravy.

To show you how easy this is to make a dinner for four in less than 30 minutes, the Omaha Steaks Test Kitchen put together a quick step-by-step recipe using the items mentioned above. Try it!
