How to Grill the Perfect Ribeye

The ribeye is a delicious steak with rich, buttery flavors and juicy texture. A perfectly grilled ribeye can be achieved in just five simple steps. Learn how to prep your grill and how long to cook steak to grill a perfect ribeye every time. Be ready for easy summer grilling!

The Best Ribeyes for Grilling

Ribeyes, by nature, have higher marbling than other steak cuts. These little white lines of fat melt into your steak as it cooks resulting in a juicier texture and rich, bold flavors. You can learn more about the ribeye and how our butchers cut this steak cut in our Ribeye Butcher’s Guide.

The true secret to a tender steak is in the aging process. We’ve mastered the art of beef aging with a 28-day minimum aging process in very controlled conditions. This allows the enzymes naturally in the meat to break down the muscle tissue, creating an improved texture and more intense flavor. Select a 28-day aged ribeye online or a 28-day aged Private Reserve ribeye for the best steak grilling experience.

How to Grill a Ribeye

1. Thaw

For best results, steaks need to be completely thawed. You can use several thawing methods, including overnight in the refrigerator or a quick-thaw method in cold water. Once thawed, bring steaks to room temperature, about 30 minutes on the kitchen counter before you plan to grill them.

2. Preheat Grill

Preheat your gas grill on high or start your charcoal 15 minutes before you grill. A pre-heated grill ensures you get that perfect sear.

3. Season

Simple is best with seasoning. Pat dry your steaks, then rub a little olive oil on each side of the ribeye to help the seasonings stick. Season liberally with course sea salt or Omaha Steaks Seasoning 15 inches about the steak to evenly distribute seasoning. Make sure to season all sides of the ribeye.

4. Grill

Cook your steak to temperature to your desired doneness, not time for best results. Our chefs recommend cooking a ribeye to medium-rare for the best eating experience. Use our steak doneness guide to determine the temperature for your perfect ribeye. Use our chef-tested steak cooking chart or the Omaha Steaks app with a steak cooking timer to get an accurate timing guide for grilling and flipping your ribeye. We recommend double checking the doneness by temperature with a meat thermometer at the center of the ribeye.

The ribeye has high marbling and melting fat can ignite and flare-ups can occur. Watch the grill for flare-ups to avoid overcooking the steak. If a flare-up occurs, move your steaks out of the fire. It’s a good idea to keep a water-filled spray handy to douse unruly flames.

If you’re worried about overcooking your ribeye, try our exclusive Omaha-Cut Ribeye. It’s a thicker ribeye from the heart of the rib primal and its shape is cut similar to a filet mignon. A thicker steak is more forgiving on the grill with less worry of overcooking. Expert Tip – for steaks thicker than 1” start cooking on indirect heat first (light only one side of the grill and cook on the unlit side), then move to direct heart for the perfect sear.

5. Rest and Enjoy!

Let your ribeye rest at least five minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. Just a little time to sit will result in a delicious, juicy, and buttery ribeye. Top with a smoky bacon butter for an unforgettable steak dinner. Enjoy!
