It’s a fact: we’re known for our steaks and meat delivery. (We are Omaha Steaks, after all.) Especially when it comes to dads, we’re known for beef, but believe it or not, we also have some of the freshest, highest quality fish you’ll find anywhere.
In most cases, our fish is processed and flash frozen just a few short hours and sometimes minutes after being caught, ensuring that our fish is as fresh as it can be. One of the most common questions we get is about how to cook fish. Thankfully, it’s really not as hard as people think it is!
First, when cooking fish you want to start by making sure it’s fully thawed. Next, we recommend blotting it completely dry with a clean paper towel. We like to brush our fish with olive oil and season it with a little sea salt and white pepper, or if you prefer, use a blend such as our Omaha Steaks Seasoning, which is excellent on fish.
We recommend using one of three methods to cook fish:
On the grill, we like a firmer, meatier fish such as Swordfish, Mahi Mahi or Ahi Tuna. When it comes to more delicate fish like Sea Bass, Halibut, Cod, or Sole, we recommend the sauté pan or the oven. Some fish — such as salmon — are great pretty much any way you cook them.
Don’t overcook the fish!
The most common mistake people make is overcooking their fish. When in doubt, err on the side of cooking it less. All you have to do is watch it while it’s cooking.
Fish starts out translucent and as it cooks, the protein denatures and becomes opaque. Watch the sides of the fish while it’s cooking and wait for the sides to just turn opaque — then you know it’s perfect! It’s also good to keep in mind that fish will continue to cook after you remove it from the grill, pan or oven, just like steak. Once the fish is done, add a little fresh lemon juice or a simple sauce.
Use our seafood cooking chart
Of course, the easiest way to cook fish perfectly every time is to just use our seafood cooking chart. We spent weeks testing all the fish we sell to come up with the perfect cooking times for each type. This takes all the guesswork out of the equation and makes it really easy.
So the next time you order some steaks, be sure to order up some of our fish as well and try out these tips on how to cook fish! Before long, you’ll be a fish cooking expert.
